What moves the price
Neighbourhood more than city. In every market the suburban strip-mall salon is $35 to $40 and the downtown studio with a Russian or dry manicure is $55 to $70; the gap inside Toronto is bigger than the gap between Toronto and Ottawa. Then the service: builder gel and Gel-X have replaced acrylic in many studios and cost $10 to $20 more per set. Then tax, which is 5% in Alberta, 13% in Ontario and just under 15% in Quebec, and tip, which most people put at 15 to 20% on the pre-tax price.
The $35 alternative, in every city on this list
Pick Any 3 press-on nail sets for $35 is $11.67 a set instead of $16.99, ships free anywhere in Canada because it clears the $30 free-shipping line, and leaves Toronto the same day if you order before 12 PM Eastern. Each set is 32 nails in 16 sizes, two of each, with reusable adhesive tabs and nail glue in the box plus a prep pad, file and cuticle stick. On glue a set lasts two to three weeks, one salon cycle; on tabs 10 to 14 days and it comes off clean to wear again. A year of fresh sets every three weeks is six bundles, $210, with no appointment, no tip and no removal fee.
