To remove press-on nails without damage, soak your fingertips in warm soapy water for five to ten minutes, then lift each nail from the sides with a cuticle stick and let it release. Never pull from the tip. If a nail resists, soak longer. That is the whole method, and it is the same one printed on the back of every VitaNails box. Everything below is the detail: why it works, what changes with glue, and how to get the residue off so the next set sticks.
Why warm water works
Adhesive tabs are a pressure-sensitive film. Warmth softens the film and water creeps under the edge, so the bond lets go from the sides inward. You are not dissolving anything; you are giving the tab a reason to let go. Soap helps because it breaks the surface tension so water gets under the nail faster. Ten minutes is usually enough. If you bathed or showered recently the set may already be loose, which is why we tell you to keep hands dry for the first hour after application, not after.
Lifting without taking your nail with it
Use the cuticle stick from the box. Slide the flat end under one side of the press-on near the cuticle, rock it gently toward the other side, and the nail should pop up on its own. Work side to side, not from the tip. The tip is the strongest part of the bond and pulling from there peels the top layer of your natural nail. If you feel resistance, stop and soak for another five minutes. Patience costs you five minutes; forcing it costs you two weeks of thin nails.
If you used glue
Glue is a cyanoacrylate and it does not care about warm water the way tabs do. Soak longer, 15 to 20 minutes, with a few drops of cuticle oil or olive oil in the water. Oil weakens the bond at the edge. Then lift from the sides exactly as above. If it still will not move, an acetone-based remover will dissolve the glue, but it also dries your nail, so follow with oil. A glued set is single wear; the nails are not reusable once they come off.
Getting the residue off
Tab residue rolls off with a thumb or the cuticle stick once the nail is dry. Do not file it off; filing removes nail. Wash your hands, and if you are reapplying straight away, wipe each nail with the alcohol pad from the new box so the fresh tabs grip clean keratin, not old adhesive.
What damages nails, and what does not
Press-ons get blamed for damage that removal causes. Applied with tabs and taken off the way the box says, they leave your nails exactly as they found them. If your nails feel thin after a set, the cause is almost always a nail that was forced off, or glue removed with acetone and no oil afterwards.
