Press-on nails last two weeks when three things are true: the nail is the right width, the natural nail is clean and dry when you press, and you keep your hands out of water for the first hour. Miss any one and you get three days. The routine below takes about 15 minutes for ten nails and is the difference between the reviews that say "fell off in the shower" and the ones that say "two weeks and still on".
1. Size first, on dry nails
Width is the whole game. A press-on that overhangs onto skin by even half a millimetre lifts at the edge and is gone in days. Lay each nail against your own at the widest point; it should meet the edge without touching skin. Between two sizes, take the smaller and file its side. 2. Push back, then take the shine off
Push your cuticles back with the stick from the box so the press-on can sit right up against the base. Then file the surface of each natural nail lightly, three or four passes. You are not thinning the nail, you are removing the natural gloss so the adhesive has texture to grip. Skip this on weak or peeling nails; the alcohol wipe alone will do.
3. Wipe and do not touch
Wipe every nail with the alcohol pad and then keep your fingertips off them. Skin oil is the single biggest reason press-ons fail. If you touch your face, your hair, or hand cream after the wipe, wipe again. This is the step most people skip and the one that matters most.

4. Press from the cuticle out, 15 seconds, hard
Apply the tab or one dot of glue on the nail and one on the press-on, line the press-on up under the cuticle, angle it down and press firmly from the cuticle toward the tip for 15 seconds. The bond forms under pressure, not over time. A hard 15 seconds beats a soft 30. Do all ten, then press each one again.
5. Keep them dry for an hour
Tabs and glue both finish bonding over the first hour. Water in that window gets under the edge and the set never fully seats. Apply after your shower, not before. After the first hour, showers, dishes and hand washing are fine; long hot soaks will shorten wear on any adhesive.
Two things that add days
A clear top coat over the press-ons once they are on adds shine and a layer of strength, and it seals the edge at the cuticle where lifting starts. Reapply it every four or five days. And a tiny bit of cuticle oil around the nail, not on it, keeps the skin from drying and tugging at the edge.
